When Justin’s parents denied him a Superman suit, he harnessed his powers of creativity for the first time with a pair of red underpants, blue pyjamas and a red towel. It took Justin another twenty years to discover you could actually make a living out of being creative. Working in London as a security guard in the early nineties, Justin saw the Wonderbra “Hello Boys” billboard at his local Tube station, and promptly subjected himself to a drug trial for enough pay to return home to study copywriting.

As a fledgling writer at FCB Jhb, he cut his teeth on True Love radio, winning the first of several Ads Of The Year over the course of his career. He then moved to Lowe Bull Jhb where he teamed up with Andrew Whitehouse and together, they won multiple Grand Prix’s and Ads Of The Year for their iconic work on Coca Cola and Dulux. The Dulux “Any Colour You Can Think Of’ campaign became the most awarded campaign in Loerie history and went on to be named campaign of the decade by Financial Mail. As a writer, Justin frequently topped what was then known as The Creative Director’s Forum rankings.

Today, Justin has one of the most respected track records in SA Advertising with over three hundred local and international Creative, Effectiveness and Business awards.

He founded FoxP2 in 2005, naming the agency after the creativity gene. FoxP2 won a Cannes Lion within six months of opening its doors and over the last fifteen years, has topped the Loeries table on a number of occasions, as well as the Small Agency and Medium Sized Agency rankings.

Significantly, Justin’s most awarded creative work is mirrored with its Apex and Loerie Effectivenss awards. He has created iconic brand platforms that continue to be leveraged decades later – Coronation Trust Is Earned, MWeb Connect and You Can, Ster-Kinekor Great Moments At Their Greatest. And his work has an uncanny way of permeating popular culture with campaigns that capture the public’s imagination – from the spine-chilling Pappa Wag Vir Jou for Drive Dry to the uplifting Project Open Eyes for Ster-Kinekor.

FoxP2 won the inaugural Creative Circle Digital Ad Of The Year in 2011, as well as the Roger Garlick Media Grand Prix for its Pappa Wag Wir Jou viral video using Thunda.com. The agency has won the Finmail and Finweek Agency Of The Year on four occasions, with Justin also featuring regularly in the MarkLives Most Admired Creative Director lists. A popular keynote speaker, he opened the Design Indaba in 2011 with a talk on fighting for creative principles entitled, “Why Wookiees Don’t Wear Pants.” He has judged international award shows that include Cannes, One Show, Clio’s and London International Awards, as well as chaired the local Loerie Awards. He has represented the SA Creative Circle as an Exco board member since 2009.

Justin served as Creative Circle Chairman from 2014-2016 when it won most admired industry body for the first time in its history. The partnership he secured with Coca Cola was significant in that it marked the first time a non-media business entity in SA so publicly staked its flag to the mask of creativity. He forged a lasting partnership with Umuzi which has become a consistent pipeline for young black talent to enter the industry over the last decade with over 500 Umuzi graduates placed in South African agencies to date.
